The Lucky New Sex Workers

Saturday, August 13th, 2011
Today’s sex workers are much luckier than their forbears a generation ago. They do not appreciate their good fortune because they do not remember the sad old days. Some 25 years earlier, due to the Internet and cell phones (and before that gay newspapers) the street hustling scene has changed drastically. The hustlers of old stood on specific street corners waiting for johns. Often, they did “car dates” -
hopping into cars whose drivers slowed down to let them in. Conducting
business in the streets was extremely disadvantageous for them. First, the
were hassled by the police as well as by competitors. Second, they had
absolutely no control over their time. They had to wait to be picked up. This
could take five minutes or five hours. Third, by standing in designated  street corners they advertised themselves as hustlers to all passersby. Fourth, waiting for johns in inclement weather often forced them to lower their asking price drastically, in order to get out of the rain or snow. Once they could advertise their services on,the Web, they had a much wider market for their services. They were also able to preserve, to a certain degree, their anonymity. The cell phone  enabled them to conduct their business from wherever they wished. In the beginning, only computer literate hustlers availed themselves of the Internet, opening the profession to much more educated young men. Strangely, it also enabled older – sometimes much older – hustlers to enter the business. They now referred to themselves as escorts, or even “elite escorts.”Presently, the more politically correct term is “sex workers.” They bestowed upon their johns the title of “clients.” Eventually,  computer literacy spread. All a sex worker needed was a working cell phone. The Web ads could be placed at the library or in an Internet café. By now, using the Web to advertise sex workers’ availability, has spread globally. This means that travelers can get in touch with sex workers long before their arrival in the new place. Some sex workers still seek business in bars. The advantage is that they can hustle free drinks there and do not have to standoutside in the cold. Nowadays, only losers conduct their sex business in the streets. They are the ones whose phones are regularly disconnected because they haven’t paid for the service. Even fairly uneducated workers know enough about computers to place their ads. Often they will write, “Call or text me,” to avoid long correspondence.Probably the most important development is the ability of sex workers to “dehustlerize” themselves. They can remove their ads at will and venture into other fields of endeavor. While information on the Internet lives forever, a live ad can be deleted at will.
